Green River Cemetery Chapel Restoration Fund
GRC Chapel Restoration Fund Launched to Save a this Historic Landmark
For more than a century, the Green River Cemetery Chapel has stood as one of the cemetery’s most cherished landmarks — a quiet, dignified space built to honor loved ones and serve generations of families in Greenfield. Its simple architecture, handcrafted details, and long service to the community make it an important part of GRC’s history.
Today, however, the chapel is in urgent need of repair. Time, weather, and age have taken a toll on the structure, leaving the roof, windows, interior woodwork, and foundation in deteriorating condition. Without restoration, the building risks further decline and the potential loss of a historic feature that has shaped the cemetery’s identity for decades.
The GRC Board has officially begun a multi-phase effort to restore the chapel to its former beauty. This includes applying for a Community Preservation Act (CPA) grant, planning structural repairs, and launching a dedicated Chapel Restoration Fund to ensure the project can move forward responsibly and sustainably.
Community interest has already been strong, with many residents expressing support and asking how they can help. Donations of any size make a meaningful difference and demonstrate to grant organizations that the public is committed to preserving this historic space.
